My day of nothing is getting awfully busy
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 8:10 pm

On my 2nd full day of vacation I had no plans. Tomorrow was a wedding with all the et ceteras. Today was to be full day of nothing. I could do nothing if I wished, or spontaneously do whatever might happen to come to mind… eat at a random crab shack, take a walk on the beach, or perhaps go wine tasting.

My how things change.

Late last night I learned of plans to visit the Hearst Castle. Leave at noon. Begin tour at 1:45. Finish tour around 3. Be back around 5. So there went most of the afternoon. This would have been more OK had I known that it was actually planned. Rather, it had been passed along as a question, “What do you think about visiting the Hearst Castle.” The response was that with a 1+hour drive up and 1+hour drive back… it was too much driving than I’d prefer for a 5-day trip that has cross-country flights on both ends of it. It seemed the idea was dead. Apparently it was just a zombie.

As soon as we arrived back at the rental house, we learned of new plans, “oh! we’ve been invited to the rehearsal dinner.” How fitting. I’d asked many days before I crossed the country if I should plan to attend a rehearsal dinner. Oh well. Hopefully the food is good; I do like free food.

On the road

Today’s been long. I started in Northern Virginia, almost 22 hours later I’m blogging from Pismo Beach.

I woke up around 6:30 and was at work by 7:30. I worked through lunch until about 3. Working wasn’t originally on the schedule for today. My flight was supposed to leave around 3PM. But American moved it back several hours and we needed people at work, so I figured I’d bank the vacation day for later.

After work I raced home to finish laundry and finish packing. Shortly after 4, I was on the way to Dulles for my 6:30 flight to LAX. Nothing of note happened at the airport or on the flight. Landed at LAX approximately on schedule just before 9PM. Caught an odd shuttle to American’s commuter terminal and arrived at 9:15 for a 9:30 flight to Santa Barbara. That flight went fine and we landed right about 10PM (real quick flight; I wish they could all be like that). Then off to pick up the rental car. After a 90 mile drive up highway 101, I arrived in Pismo Beach around 3AM.

I feel tired, but also slightly energetic. I’m going to let ‘tired’ win here and hit the sack. I’ll be asleep in under 5 minutes I bet.
