Frightening

Financial “reform” is near.

“This is about as important as it gets, because it deals with every single aspect of our lives,” said Sen. Christopher Dodd (D., Conn.), a chief architect of the compromise.

Even better:

“No one will know until this is actually in place how it works. But we believe we’ve done something that has been needed for a long time. It took a crisis to bring us to the point where we could actually get this job done.”

This borders on honesty for a politician. I doubt we’ll hear much else like it.

College World Series

“That’s ball 14″

I’m watching the Oklahoma-Clemson game. After 3 solid innings, the Oklahoma pitcher began the inning by walking 3 batters on 12 straight pitchers, he threw two more balls before finding the plate in what was likely an accident. The pitcher has been sacked.

In other items related to the CWS, I’ve been amused by the commentary. I’d recently read an opinion about the refreshing nature of World Cup commentating. The writer noticed how much WC announcers will be openly critical of the players on the field, whereas it seems commentators covering typical American sports often go out of their way to be excusatory if not complimentary. So the following comments from yesterday’s Clemson-ASU game were fairly amusing:

  • After a hard shot went through the ASU first basement, the announcer excused it because of how well the ball was struck (actually a fair point, IMO)
  • Shortly after, the ASU pitcher was yanked. The announcer added something like, “I have to think that this early start time is causing him problems.” As if only one of the 2 teams had an early start time.
  • Then the ASU left-fielder completely lost track of an easy fly ball. To which were told how easy it is to lose a ball in the clear blue sky.
I’ll be honest, I wish the whole church had burned down.

Thor is really trying to start shit here

Of course it would be stupid shit like this that would cause my hometown to make the national news.

PS – Dear CollegeHumor, why do you provide code to embed your pictures that does not embed a picture?

Good for you for acquiring DVDPlay, of which I was once a customer and willing email list subscriber. Please note that I successfully and easily removed myself from the DVDPlay subscription list in June 2009. Therefore I am a bit miffed to find that I have now been auto-subscribed to your new lists. And I’m getting a bit pissed that you are now emailing me daily and ignoring that fact that your own computer system recognizes that I am “not currently subscribed to any emails.”

Please fix this or die in a fire.

Sincerely,

Nobrainer

Major Pet Peeve

Among the things I really hate in this world is unnecessarily large email attachments. Maybe it’s because Thunderbird sucks at dealing with them and because I use Thunderbird. Or maybe they’re just a pain in the ass in general. I’m not sure. But I do know that I hate them.

Today’s waste of mailbox space came courtesy of our production department who completed an update the company facebook and emailed a copy to everyone. I’ll finish this post later with additional details after the file actually stops downloading.

Another wind energy post

I’ve written quite a bit about the technical merits of wind energy. The downside to wind energy seems to be the political and economic merits. To wit, this intro paragraph from Bloomberg says it all:

Wind-energy companies agreed to buy more parts from U.S. suppliers, and a labor union promised to join in lobbying Congress for a requirement to use more renewable energy.
