“That’s ball 14″
I’m watching the Oklahoma-Clemson game. After 3 solid innings, the Oklahoma pitcher began the inning by walking 3 batters on 12 straight pitchers, he threw two more balls before finding the plate in what was likely an accident. The pitcher has been sacked.
In other items related to the CWS, I’ve been amused by the commentary. I’d recently read an opinion about the refreshing nature of World Cup commentating. The writer noticed how much WC announcers will be openly critical of the players on the field, whereas it seems commentators covering typical American sports often go out of their way to be excusatory if not complimentary. So the following comments from yesterday’s Clemson-ASU game were fairly amusing:
- After a hard shot went through the ASU first basement, the announcer excused it because of how well the ball was struck (actually a fair point, IMO)
- Shortly after, the ASU pitcher was yanked. The announcer added something like, “I have to think that this early start time is causing him problems.” As if only one of the 2 teams had an early start time.
- Then the ASU left-fielder completely lost track of an easy fly ball. To which were told how easy it is to lose a ball in the clear blue sky.
