The New Guy

For absolutely no good reason, I just watched the bulk of that movie. Let’s just say that I don’t recommend it.

However, the lead character was a member of a funk band, which raises a good question (directed at Agent and Funk): what do y’all recommend? What is good enough that it is actually worth buying? Perhaps a top 5 CDs list?

Start with Parliaments greatest hits. Wash, rinse and repeat as needed, that is a nasty CD that just pulls you in and I could listen to on loop for a long time. Other funk would be old Red Hot Chili Peppers, they actually are a funk rooted band and had an album produced by George Clinton!! After that, it’s sort of difficult to find the funk that we consider pure funk beats with the thumping bass guitar and syncopations. I cede my time to the Funkmaster Blaster when he has a chance.

It really depends on what type of funk you enjoy. Some funk music leans heavily towards disco (think “Car Wash” “Love Rollercoaster” etc) while other funk leans towards rock (”Play that funk music White Boy” RHCP version of “Love Rollercoaster” etc.)

It can be hit or miss. Do you like instrument driven funk or techno-funk? Here are a few of my favorite songs:

Celebration (Kool and the Gang)
Jungle Boogie (Kool and the Gang)
Play That Funky Music White Boy
Flashlight (GC and PFunk)
Erotic City (George Clinton Version)
Superstious (Stevie Wonder)
When I Grow Up (Gran Torino)
Superbad (James Brown)
Get Up (James Brown)
Atomic Dog (George Clinton)
Get Down On it

This is what I consider a great selection. I would just go to itunes and buy these songs. This is funk music at its fullest. I feel like a lot of other songs are just copy cat artists (pretenders) that were trying to make a buck during the disco era, but that’s for you to decide.
