Power backups for modems & routers?
Filed under: Computing, Technology — nobrainer @ 11:04 pm

This may be right up Doug’s alley, but I figured I’d post to get additional responses.

I’m wondering if there is a good reason to get a battery backup for my cable modem and wireless router. I would like to think that if the power were to go out, my battery-powered laptop would be able to connect to the internet through my battery-backed-up router and modem. However it looks as though there’s a good chance that my cable will go out if the power goes out. If that’s true, it means that the backup is probably unnecessary. And it probably also means that I don’t need to think any more about getting battery backups for my TV.

Anyway, does anyone have input or experience with this kind of thing?

I suppose it really depends on whether there are any cable repeaters or other powered infrastructure that would get caught up in a power outage as well. There may be some benefit in UPSing your cable modem if the above is untrue. DSL definitely keeps working in a power outage (due to the vagaries of the old telephone infrastructure).

If you’re all that worried about it, though, the best bet would be to get an EVDO (or similar) card for your laptop. Then, if the power goes out, just fire up the cellular backup.

Sounds like a utility reliability issue above all else. Are they above or under ground and what has been your and your neighbors expereience? Sounds like you are not using any form of air card either. Too bad they don’t do pre-paid air cards otherwise I think that would be your best bet. Gut feeling…save your cash or spend it on an extra battery and find a Starbucks.

I doubt that my neighbors know if their cable stays on when the power goes out.

I do have an air card through work, which I’m definitely allowed to use. But I was hoping to have a seamless option. Oh well.
