Quick movie reviews
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 8:54 pm

Last weekend I got to watch a couple of newer movies, Superbad, and I Am Legend. As you probably know, I don’t love movies, and I didn’t love these 2. So, on to my quick reviews.

Suberbad: I think I’ve gotten too old to appreciate this kind of movie. Stories about high school seniors trying to get laid for the first time just don’t appeal to me anymore… or at least this movie didn’t. There were certainly some funny parts. But on the whole it was just too over-the-top and too awkward. I’d have probably enjoyed the movie much more 5 or 7 years ago.

I Am Legend: I Am Legend is pretty decent as a thriller. I enjoyed watching it. But I didn’t especially like the movie. My dislike stems from 2 things: the first is the required amount of suspended thought; the second is the lame payoff at the end.

I guess you wouldn’t like Beerfest, Walk Hard, Anchorman, Talledega Nights . . . et cetera either, then.

I hated how the zombie’s were digital in I Am Legend. That kind of ruined it for me.

Beerfest and Walk Hard I have not seen.

Anchorman I mostly enjoyed.

Talladega Nights was ok. I’m starting to believe that Will Ferrell absolutely should not be allowed to star in movies. He’s great in small roles, but no movie should focus on him.

As for the zombies, that does remind me that I thought the CGI in I Am Legend was kinda bad. That bothered me. Speaking of the zombie people, I wasn’t bothered that they had superhuman strength, but I was bothered their skeletal strength was obviously superhuman as well.

I agree, Superbad sucked. I am getting tired of teen angst movies with nothing in terms of substance and limited humor. The last one that “worked” for me was Road Trip and that was just outrageously wacky.

As for Ferrel, he is done as a main man. He has resorted to mocking sports, any and all, in movies that should go directly to DVD if not the trash. After Tdega Nights, he should have stopped.

Man,

Maybe I just enjoy laughing so much that I’ll laugh at just about any stupid movie. I enjoyed ‘Superbad,’ and I watch ‘T-dega Nights’ about once every 8 weeks. I guess you guys wouldn’t like ‘Walk Hard,’ either. It’s a lot funnier if you’ve watched ‘Ray’ and ‘Walk the Line.’

So, if you’re standards of humor are higher, maybe I’m missing some good movies. Are there any really funny movies out?

collapse nobrainer Says:

I don’t know if its a standard of humor issue. It is possible that I’m just getting bored with the same ol’ stuff.

I think there can be 3 general types of comedies:
1 - The movies that are legitimately funny
2 - The ones where you say “that’s disgusting and I shouldn’t be laughing, but it’s pretty damn funny”, and
3 - The ones that are just disgusting.

I think Superbad crossed the line from 2 to 3.

No, I just thought that the “hey i can write a movie about what I wish I did in High School” genre is worn out. Honestly, we could make some serious coin on a movie called “300 Woodland” if you consider SuperBad a successful comedy damnit.

collapse nobrainer Says:

Speaking of bad movies, CollegeHumor wrote about 10 Films Not Good Enough For DVD.

Now that I think of it, I have seen some really awful movies in my life. Compared to those, Superbad is pretty good.
