Lowlight of my day
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 9:03 pm

Some wise guy (and I’m pretty sure it was a guy because there just aren’t many women in the office) decided to switch my stapler from the preferable and normal prong-convergence mode to the highly annoying prong-divergence mode.

If someone touches my stapler again, someone is going to die.

Piddly sh*t
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 11:32 pm

The title “piddly sh*t” is appropriate on many levels.

The first is about a php script I worked on all afternoon. The reason for the script and the script itself are almost entirely unimportant. However, the script output was slightly wrong and giving me fits. That is until about 15 minutes ago when the truth dawned on me: the script wasn’t wrong, the right answer was wrong. The right answer being wrong is completely my fault. The script being right is entirely to my credit because it appears that the example script I was given was flawed from the start. Yay programming!

Other piddly-sh*t news will have to wait until later.

Thanks, NYT
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 3:18 am

It must be a slow weekend. Otherwise there is little reason to explain the recent NYT article, “Gas Prices Rise on Refineries’ Record Failures.” The headline is so vague as to be entirely misleading. But the article contains a gem that I can barely believe made is past the editors.

Some critics of the industry have theorized on Internet blogs that the squeeze on gasoline and other refined products points to a deliberate effort among oil companies to bolster profits by keeping supplies tight.

As best I can figure, that translates to, “hey, why trust a bunch of crazy wahoos on the internet when you can trust a bunch of crazy wahoos who put their critical theories on paper!”

I’m not dead yet
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 7:37 am

I’m not dead, just keeping busy.

Work is going well. I’m still training instead of training. However that will end sooner than later. Thursday I got a 20″ LCD for my desk. Now I just need cable or satellite.

Yesterday I did some yard work at the house I’m renting. There are some shrubs that need to be trimmed back, some areas that need to be mulched, and a lot of old sticks and leaves that need to be disposed of. And I’m getting down with some serious herbicide as I try to destroy a bunch of poison ivy and wild raspberry.

Yesterday was also computer surgery day. My desktop got a new cooling fan. That repair was approximately number 112 for the machine. The old fan had decided to start making a pleasant grinding sound. I’m not sure what caused such a problem. However, the copious amounts of dust caked throughout it may have affected the bearings.

The laptop received a 4x memory upgrade. It went from 512mb to 2GB. That is keeping the hard drive from being called upon for virtual memory duty, and that is a good thing.

More Virginia Vanity Plates
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 11:57 pm

Much credit is due to the creative people of Virginia who, perhaps inadvertently, get very interesting vanity plates. Among these is one of my previous favorites, “WUTITIZ,” or, as I read it, “woo! titties!”

In my recent travels, I passed a biker with the plate “NEKKED.” Obviously someone working for the state is asleep behind the wheel.

This morning, Rachel pointed out a weird license plate. I did not see the one she pointed to because I noticed “DOGSX3.” Does the proud owner of that plate have multiple dogs, or is the owner one of several people in the state who likes to advertise their fondness of sex with a single dog? I guess that is for you to decide.

Week 1
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 10:01 pm

In case you were worried, I did survive my first week. Most of the paperwork was out of the way after the first day. The rest of the time was split among training sessions. Some were about the company, others about strategy, still others about MySQL training.

In the upcoming week, I’ll spend more time receiving specialized training from my team and learning the ins and outs of my market.

The company still seems good, and I am not worried about this job becoming as miserable as what some of y’all have faced. The company takes the position that we are to be given any tools we need to do our jobs. So we get good computers, extra monitors, and even a production department to make our powerpoint presentations for us.

In other news, I’m still getting settled in my new house. I have a list of things I need to buy. But it sure is good to have a washer and dryer that do not have to be fed quarters.
