George Bush wants you to starve!
Filed under: Politics, General — nobrainer @ 8:09 pm

He announced in last night’s state of the union, the “Twenty in Ten” plan.

Basically he wants to reduce gasoline usage by 20% in 10 years, primarily through the use of renewable fuels, which will probably be ethanol (handouts to the corn industry). And because it is in the interest of “energy security,” tariffs will probably be slapped on imported ethanol (another handout to Big Ag).

It all sounds vaguely similar to John Kerry’s proposed Big Ag handout “John Kerry want you to starve!” program called 20 by 2020.

The gist is that to produce that much ethanol from corn, as is typical, requires about 80% more corn than the US currently grows.

(I have since learned from that first post that corn for ethanol isn’t completely used up. Basically just the starch is removed in the process and the rest moves on as some kind of corn-food product which is edible.)

PS - There’s some movie I don’t want to watch about who killed the electric car or some shit. I’m pretty sure it blames GM — with its something like a 1 billion dollar loss — for not digging deeper into their pocket. Anyway, the true killer of the electric car are the Green Ralph Naders of world who demand legislated safety. Without extreme regulation people could be driving around town in golf carts. They’re a fraction of the price of a real car. They’re a fraction of the weight of a real car. I presume they’re much better in energy/passenger mile than a real car. And they’re fucking electric.

We don’t need to spend shitloads of money on new technology. We need to be allowed to use the technology we already have. Dumbasses.

You mean like Segways?
I saw a guy riding one of those a few weeks ago in CVille.
Of course, it had a For Sale sign on it - but still.

collapse olivier blanchard Says:

Does that mean that tortilla prices are going to go up in the US again?

collapse nobrainer Says:

Quite possibly.

In Mexico, the problem has gotten so bad that the government imposed price controls on tortillas.

Next thing you’ll be pissed about is the introduction of the catalyst converter to the car or the banning of lead from gasoline or maybe even the controls of sulfur polution that has led to the elimination of acid rain.

Not all regulation is bad and America leads the way on creating a healthier planet due to a lot of it. Do some more research.

George Bush’s plan probably won’t work because subsidies are a stupid way of promoting consumption. The best thing that should be done is the creation of a national carbon trading system that caps the amount of carbon produced. Cars are only part of the problem, the power generators are the rest. But no worries, all of the upcoming presidential nominees (republican and democrat) are endorsing some form of a carbon market place.

collapse nobrainer Says:

The government did kinda screw us (and Honda) on the catalytic converter thing.

Really here’s the main problem I have:

global warming is horrible… horrendous… we have to do everything we can to avoid disaster… or we’ll be doomed. DOOMED!

Maybe those aren’t real quotes from people, but there is certainly a lot of global warming hysteria and calls for action. It seems to me that the lawmakers who are so concerned about these issues could spend more time undoing previous regulations (of dubious effectiveness) that oppose current efforts to reduce oil/energy consumption and carbon emissions. And hopefully, unlocking some of those regulations will allow for results that are easily and cheaply achievable.

I catch an AM Station from Tenn on the way into work and heard the livestock farmers complaining about the price of feed corn already. I can’t wait to see what happens when it hits full throttle!!
