Working for peanuts
Filed under: Business, General — nobrainer @ 11:36 am

You know what’s annoying? Getting a tiny product shipped to you in a grossly oversized box that is filled with those damned Styrofoam peanuts. You know what I just learned, those things are damned expensive.

Last I was at Staples pricing some shipping materials. Two cubic feet of packing peanuts — or roughly 2 ounces — costs $9.99. The little biodegradable ones are like $6.99 for one cubic foot.

I had no idea that I’ve thrown away that much cash. Unbelievable.

You probably haven’t thrown away that much cash. Most if not all companies that use products as mentioned get tremendously better rates. The first thing I learned in sales, retail price is about as high as anyone can sell a product and not feel sick to their stomach at the end of the day. Why do you think most anyone that runs a store worth a damn is making good cash. You, my friend, were being charged retail. Next time, ask for the shortbus special. Yes, I am being a prick again, but think Wha-a-palooza. Bubble wrap. Cheap, most if not all packing stores have it, the person on the other end doesn’t have the mess but do have something to play with. You can buy me a beer next time you head to the QC.

I’m thinking a nice little secondary market for used peanuts could develop. Oh well. I doubt I’ll be making a killing of the damn things, but next time I’ll probably not throw them away.

As for the bubble wrap, it’s just as expensive. Although you are right that customers surely enjoy it better than having to sort through all those damn peanuts.

However, I bought neither. I just needed envelopes, regular and padded.

we recycle them in our supply house. giant trash cans full of peanuts and packing supplies from vendors.
