Shaving Day 20
Filed under: General, Shaving — nobrainer @ 12:21 pm

Yesterday I picked up my new razor at the post office. After a late night at the work place, I awoke this morning to the pleasure of trying out my new old-school double edged safety razor.

Having taken the advice of TrvlnMn, I ordered a Merkur “Progress” Adjustable Safety Razor.

This morning, brimming with excitement and caution, I put my new razor to the test. Little was I aware that I must be the butt of some sick joke. Not only was the shave not close, but my face was left burning long after the event.

My thoughts about the experience are not too different from those of a girl who has just been deflowered. “Is it supposed to hurt so much the first time?” “Will it get better with practice?” “Is it normal to bleed that much?”

Pardon my language and lack of creativity, but fuck this shit. This must be the reason why hardly anyone uses this old razors like this.

On the upside, I found myself very pleased to be back to using the old Mach3 while I was away at last weekend’s wedding. I used the Fusion HydraGel and found that even shaving against the grain wasn’t too horrible (and much less aggravating than the DESR). It seems that, contrary to some advice and wisdom suggesting using fewer strokes, things work better with a lot of short choppy strokes.

On the downside, all this testing is still taking a toll on my face. The against-the-grain shaving has caused breakouts around my mouth. I think that to some extent the problems were caused over a week ago but are just slow to heal.

I’ll use the DESR a few more times at least–including some side-by-side tests–before pulling the plug.

You have entirely too much insight into what a girl thinks after the “deflowering”, it’s unnerving.

I stick to my guns about taking care of this in the shower. It will enhance the experience of any razor you use.

Sorry it’s not working for you. Shaving’s different for everyone.

I’ve got the type of facial hair that even smooth shaven it looks like I’ve got a five o’clock shadow, so those other razors just don’t last as long, or rinse out as well. So by mid-shave the blades usually too gunked up, and missing spots mid-blade. As a result I end up using more blades with a Gillette type model than I would with the DESR style. Plus I can’t stand the gel/glide strips that seem to be on most of the Gillette types of razor blades.

As I said in my other post at “shaving day-22″ The DESR does take some getting used to. Plus (for people who are happy with it) it’s a razor one can almost guarantee ones girlfriend or wife would never feel tempted to borrow.

Good luck with your shaving experiments.
