New terminology needed
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 10:35 pm

Somewhere in the history of man, we created the words “aunt” and “uncle”, thus saving ourselves from having to say “dad’s brother” or “mom’s sister” or whatnot.

For some reason we still use father-in-law, or mother-in-law, etc. I’m also getting sick of phrases like “girlfriend’s parents”.

Surely we can do better. Let’s save some syllables and make some new words. Any suggestions?

Hemorrhoids – too many syllables but fitting.

Perhaps we need two sets with positive and negative connotations, respectively.

How about In-bills?
(it’s the step before in-laws)

While we’re on the subject, I’d like to submit a request for a collective term for “nieces and nephews”.

In-bills works for the combo. But father-in-bill is still too wordy. Fib and mib I could deal with (even though to me FIB means focused ion beam).

niecews for Susan, that is what I am calling my upcoming niece/nephew that my sister does not want to know the sex of until birth. Of course, I take all responsibility if the kid comes out a hermaphrodite according to her.

If you are married, your partner’s parents are in-laws, so if you aren’t married they should be outlaws.
