Boredom Part II
Filed under: General, My Inventions — nobrainer @ 8:44 pm

It has probably already been invented, but I do not know for the life of me why it isn’t in every bathroom.

Today I was chastised for leaving the toilet seat up. In my defense, I’m pretty well trained in this area — but not perfect.

Anyway, it seems that the seats should be operated by a foot pedal. If you’re standing, you hit the pedal, the seat is up. You leave and the seat goes down. She’s happy because she doesn’t fall in. You’re happy because she’ll be able to find the next thing to yell at you about. I’m happy because I’ll be fucking rich for making these things.

Seriously, this should easily be a linkage-mass-spring-damper system. The engineering can’t be difficult at all. Plus I can’t imagine it adding more than $10 to the price of a seat, and who doesn’t spend $10 if it helps keep your wife off your back?

TO THE DRAWING BOARD!

Boredom Part I

Due to extreme boredome, I visited the online version of The Tiger. I definitely didn’t go there to enjoy any journalism. The few articles that have caught my eye this year have been of horrible quality — well below that of the folks at UVA who manage to publish their newspaper daily. But I digress. I didn’t read any articles, but I did vote for the Best of Clemson. I didn’t know most of what they were talking about, but it helped kill five minutes.

Winding Down, Gearing Up
Filed under: Adventures, General — nobrainer @ 11:38 pm

As I begin this post, it’s about 10 PM on November 21st. Seventy-two hours ago I was venturing down I-77 through Charlotte on a 360 mile trip to Columbia.

That inevitably led to a night of drinking, followed by a whole day and night of drinking and subsequently a bit of a foggy memory and headache on Sunday morning.

Frank: “Why do you drink so much?”
Dean: “I drink to forget.”
Frank: “Forget what?”
Dean: “I don’t know. I forgot that a long time ago.”

Seriously though, catching up with some of the members of the infamous Tittsburgh Posse and seeing another Clemson victory over SC (watching on TV) made for a great weekend. But after a tasty burrito from Moe’s and a nap, I covered another 550 miles en route to my hometown in Ohio.

Today, fortunately, was a bit more relaxing. My dad and I played 18 since I had my clubs and today had the best forecast of any day for the next week. It was mostly sunny and chilly. For mid-November the course was in great shape — except that 90% of the bunkers were filled with water. I could have shot better, but I wasn’t drinking. I was cold enough that I didn’t want to, either. Since I hadn’t played in about 2 months, it took a while to knock the rust off my game. I finished pretty strong just before the turn. From 10-16 I played bogey-par golf before blowing up on 17 and exploding beyond belief on 18. In the end I managed a crowd pleasing 103 on the day.

That was followed up with some Chinese food, hot coffee and a whole lot of nothing. Awesome.

Tomorrow, however, I have to get my butt to the DMV. Yup, my license expires. Apparently that means it’s my birthday again. The ol’ counter hits the quarter-century mark. In order to celebrate, the family is planning its traditional feast, which is always enjoyed on the 4th Thursday of every November. After that glorious celebration held annually on my behalf, Christmas season officially begins. In addition I have only 1 1/2 weeks of class left before finals rear their ugly little heads.

So there’s no time to slow down now. I’ve got another couple quarters for doing that.

And as a closing bit of good tidings, I summon Digital Underground and the Humpty Dance to wish you peace and humptiness forever.

Beautiful Columbia, SC

Err…

Columbia, SC

Err…

Hell as I like to call it.

Well I’m here for the annual Clemson-USC football contest. I’m nervous about it. I won’t lie. SC’s ability to win games this season is perhaps their scariest attribute. Clemson is by far the superior team despite a lesser record. But the W-L is really the only thing that matters. GO TIGERS!

So expect no further blogging from me today. Tomorrow I’ll probably be on the road to Ohio, so don’t expect much then either. After that time on the road, I expect to get bored quickly at home, so the forecast calls for heavy blogging with a chance of showers.

As a side note, this website has set a new record for itself with respect to bandwidth used. I still have about 15 of 80 gigs left to use, but since I will be unable to closely monitor the goings on, I have temporarily removed the majority of the Shoeless films. I’m sure some workarounds will be found in the following days, but for the time being there is very little I can do without shelling out a ton of cash.

HellUVA bad design
Filed under: General — nobrainer @ 5:55 am

My threshold of insignificant but stupid things has recently been breached, and I must vent about some (additional) goings on at Mr. Jefferson’s university.

The folks in charge of engineering facilities seem to have sense for aesthetics. This doesn’t really matter to me, but on such a “beautiful campus” they bug me a little bit more.

Thornton Hall is a maze. The 5 sections are each a wing, and they don’t interconnect well. Going from point A to point B in this building typically involves going outside. Finding a men’s restroom can be dangerous to your bladder. If you’re in the computer lab on the 2nd floor of the A-Wing at night, the nearest bathroom is probably in the basement of the C-Wing, just before where the E-Wing starts.

The MSE building is making progress. Until recently many walls were covered with horrible abstract engineering paintings. Fortunately the walls were cleaned, but they were repainted white with brown trim. There, fortunately, the men’s bathroom is easy to find. Inside however resides a filing cabinet (frat club anyone?). During the painting, a nice little display of how to make aluminum cans was moved, apparently permanently, into the restroom.

Now for my home away from home, the mechanical & aerospace building. A mechanical engineering building should not have an elevator that is best drescribed as “barely functional” and “a little bit scary.” The displays in the building were all appropriate about 15 years ago. Highlighting old equipment to emphasize changes is great, but it’s sad when the “new” equipment had its heyday before the first year students were born. And if you want free junk, just stroll around the basement. I’m sure they’ll be glad for some of the stuff to disappear. And the bare concrete floors in the hallways look real nice.

Furthermore, the design of the building is horrid. It sits on a hill, or maybe more of a ridge. Either way the first floor of the building is above the equivalent floors of the buildings to the east and west. The main entrances to the building, however, are on the 2nd floor. So out front a temporary wheelchair ramp has been built to overcome the ascent required for entrance. Now, there’s probably a law mandating this, but on the ramp is a little blue sign with the image of a wheelchair that says “handicapped ramp”… as opposed to the skateboarding and biking ramps.

Finally I’d like to address the parking garage. It does not seem badly designed, just annoyingly managed. Unless you ride the bus to the garage (and we know why I don’t ride the bus), the most convenient door and stairwell are on the southeast corner. But this door is kept locked 90% of the time. Somehow, a few weeks ago, the door became unlocked and saved me some footsteps everyday. Whoever did it also left a note written on the door in some kind of marker begging for the door to be left unlocked. Well today I noticed that the powers-that-be put up stickered lettering on the inside of the glass door stating it was to remain locked and to please use the main entrance. They did not bother to remove the message in marker.

The traffic pattern just outside the gates of the garage is that of a 3-way intersection. Both paths leading toward the garage had always had red octagonal stop signs, white stripes on the road, and “stop” painted just before them. The road leading from the garage had a white stripe, but not a damn thing saying to stop. That was until today. The road has been painted with “stop”, although there is no sign. Then I noticed that the stop-sign post coming from the other direction had a little red sign: “2-Way.”

That is all.
