We are experiencing a sad state in political and bureaucratic metrics. The magic way to measure failure is the lack of spending.
Today’s politicians do not even try to hide their rampant spending habits. Too often, instead of speaking about improving test scores, reducing crime, and extending the range of the Big Rock Candy Mountains the pols go straight to promising more spending for schools, police departments, and natural resource preservation.
Today’s evidence comes from the local 11 o’clock news and former Charlottesville mayer David Toscano. Given the source I take it with a huge grain of kosher salt. The point, though, was that Toscano was promising more spending on the environment. Why? Because we aren’t spending as much as our neighbors. [edit: From Toscano's press release today, "Virginia ranks at the bottom among the states in spending to protect its air, water, and land. We must do better if we are to live up to the promise of our Constitution."]
Well if that isn’t sound governmental policy I do not know what is.
