How could this go wrong?

From an email I received this evening:

Students Educating and Empowering through Diversity(S.E.E.D. )

Would you like to see more diversity in classrooms, in organizations, on Grounds in general. Are you a student leader? Have you been involved with organizations such as B.E.A.T.S., Asian Student Union, Alianza, Queer Student Union, National Organization for Women, Sustained Dialogue, or B.U.C.K.S.? Have you taking the Multi-cultural Education class or have ever been interested in learning more about the idea “DIVERSITY?”

If so, this organization, sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, may be perfect for you. Click on the following link to find out more information www.virginia.edu/deanofstudents/seed. If you know students who may be interested, please pass the information along.

Diversity? In classrooms? Does that mean I can request a 50/50 male/female ratio in my classes, with at least 1/3 of my professors being conservative Republicans? Its doubtful, and I don’t see how setting false mandates would help anyone.

On Grounds in general? I would like to see more professors without any training. Plus I would like to see more janitors who have a net wealth of more than $10,000,000. Now that would be diverse.

In organizations? Is SEED insinuating that “organizations such as B.E.A.T.S., Asian Student Union, Alianza, Queer Student Union, National Organization for Women, Sustained Dialogue, or B.U.C.K.S.?” should themselves become diverse? Let me get this straight, SEED is recruiting from nearly specifically non-diverse groups to increasing diversity? Although I guess if they actually got to working together, than us white-”cock-man-oppressors” will finally get our just desserts.

  • I think I’m getting sick. That’ll piss me off. Among the symptoms are headaches. I never get headaches unless I suffer a hangover or head trauma, but I repeat myself.
  • For as much as I complain about the media in general, Drudge Report, in particular, really sucks, too. I need to continue to wean myself from that waste of space.
  • When attempting to boil water, it is advisable to turn on the burner on which you have your pot. It is advisable to have water in the pot. Furthermore, should you decide to turn on the wrong burner, it is advisable to not having anything flammable on or very near it.
  • There don’t appear to be any tropical storms in the Atlantic right now. What is the news media going to do until the next landfall?

“If gas prices stay like this, I’m gonna buy a horse.” God knows how many times I’ve heard that over the last few months and pretty damn sick of it. Why? Because you’re not going to buy a horse, or even use a loaner to replace your normal car activity.

Why do I have to get pissed off at this? Because the news media’s little darling lately has been the crazies who find all these wonderful alternatives to using gasoline. Yesterday I was supposed to be upset because some students were disallowed from riding their horses to school. I’m only peeved by their limitedness in seeking to save money.

Horses are horrible vehicles for a number of reasons. First let’s look at some advantages. The cost of grain per mile is likely lower than the cost of gas per mile. If you have two, well paired horses, you might be able to get several new horses without going to the horse dealership and dealing with the dreadful horse salesmen. When your horse’s engine blows up, you can shoot and bury it in a hole instead of putting it on blocks in your front yard. A good horse may even last long enough that you can have it registered as a historical automobile and get the really cool license plates.

A few weeks later and…

As early as the 8th of September, some very few media outlets were reporting that the previously reported rapes and murders at the SuperDome were likely ficticious. I noted this at that time.

Now?

Following days of internationally reported murders, rapes and gang violence inside the stadium, the doctor from FEMA — [Louisiana National Guard Col. Thomas] Beron doesn’t remember his name — came prepared for a grisly scene: He brought a refrigerated 18-wheeler and three doctors to process bodies.

“I’ve got a report of 200 bodies in the Dome,” Beron recalled the doctor saying.

The real total?

Six, Beron said.

Of those, four died of natural causes, one overdosed and another jumped to his death in an apparent suicide, said Beron, who personally oversaw the handoff of bodies from a Dome freezer, where they lay atop melting bags of ice.

No murders. Rapes? Well I still don’t know about that. I have not yet seen any reported rapes, but I recognize that this is an oft unreported crime.

However, it seems somewhat likely to me that the situation at the SuperDome would actually help prevent serious crimes (at least until it became very clear that survival was unlikely under any circumstances). Why? The location was pretty isolated, running away isn’t much of an option. I would also wager that being able to hide is out of the question. You’re surrounded by tens-of-thousands of pissed off people. Would you consider committing a major personal crime when you have no chance to run, no place to hide, and a ton of people who would like nothing more than a really good reason to unleash the fury caused by several days of misery? If you did, you’d better be damn sure that you can defend yourself. Otherwise there will be some good, old-fashioned vigilante justice and you will likely find yourself strung up by your balls.

But that’s just my opinion. I couldn’t be any more wrong than the initial and most subsequent press accounts.
