After complaining about spam email recently, I upgraded Outlook both at home and work. The effects are less than pleasing. The last 10 emails I received went directly to my inbox instead of the junkmail folder. Plus, over the last week, far too many real emails went to the junkmail folder. I would also like to bitch about the fact that when I empty the junkmail folder, it deposits the email in the deleted items folder.
Update: It looks like most of the errors were on my end. I’m on a grad student listserv. It is set up to allow anyone to send to it. Due to the junk coming through, it was apparently tagged as a junk address. Unfortunately, I was missing important messages, generally from the grad student secretary. So while I thought I was allowing only and all messages from her, I was actually automatically receiving anything sent to the list. It looks like my complaints will have to be taken to someone in IT in order to change the moderator settings.
I am going to switch my work computer over to Thunderbird, though. I have found that t-bird works pretty well on my 5+ year old laptop. But I will still use Outlook w/Plaxo for the sake of keeping my contacts universally up-to-date. Hopefully it will not be too difficult to get Outlook and T-bird to play nice.
